Tri-Training in Clermont                      Cycling in Clermont

The Netherlands

September 9 - September 18, 2010

This is the bicycle tour you have waited for. The Netherlands is known for its windmills, tulips and wooden shoes though the part of the country where this tour is going is popular for its geographical difference. It is called South Limburg and this is a true paradise for the cycling enthusiast who likes to ride hills without the exhaustion of endless climbing. Experience the breathtaking views on the top of the hills and enjoy the sometimes fast and curvy descents.

The South-Limburg landscape does invite you to go ride the bicycle. Beside the continues changing scenery, beautiful nature, cozy little villages and pleasant cities, this cycling tour will bring pure joy since your guide knows nearly every back road with little or no traffic. It is possible to ride for 150 miles with only one traffic light! The quality of the road is very good and since the Netherlands is well known for its cycling culture, there are lots of special cycling lanes and traffic is very cycling friendly.  The hills will be a part of the daily route and there will be a nice variety of grade on each day. On typical landmarks there will be the opportunity to make pictures and we can enjoy a cup of coffee at numerous places.

South Limburg is one of the places  where the soft yellow marl (Limestone) has been mined for decades. In some places the mined marl is more then 250 million years old. Marl is used to build houses because it has excellent insulation properties and a long lasting natural durability. You can find houses and castles more then three hundred years old.  All this mining created a labyrinth of tunnels which are now used for tourism. During the whole year there are organized walking and cycling tours in these mines and trained guides will always join these tours.

The area also has a very rich culinary history. Well known is the “Limburgse Vlaai”, which is a pie that can be filled with any kind of fruits or even rice pudding or just pudding. During the trip we will take you to a local bakery  to take a look to at the variety of these pies. Other delicacies are the white asparagus, ‘appelstroop’ (thick syrup made out of apples) and ‘roggebrood’ (bread made out of rye).

What to bring on the tour?

You have to bring your own bicycle since we do NOT provide bicycles. With the bike goes cycling shoes, the cycling clothing and HELMET. You will not be allowed to join any group ride if your head is not covered with a decent good fitting helmet. At that time of the year the weather is mostly  very nice with temperature during the day is usually around 72 degrees F. At night it will go down to 54 -56 degrees F. It is recommended to pack some light winter gear since it could be chilly in the morning hours. Once signed up for the tour we will provide you with a travel checklist as a guide for use during packing of your suitcase.

Every year in April the famous race classic Amstel Gold Race takes place in this part of the country. The race even crosses the border into Belgium and sometimes into Germany as well since it is so close to both borders. The professional cyclists consider this to be one of the toughest races in their schedule. It has 32 climbs,
the
roads are narrow and there are a lot of twist and turns which makes this a
very hard race.
In the year  2006 the Tour de France came through this area and with the grand finale on the famous Cauberg which has an incline of 12%.

No matter what hotel we would go to, it  is always very nice located in the same area, South Limburg. It is only a few miles away from the German and Belgium border and most of the time it is possible to visit three countries on your bicycle in just one hour! The restaurant of the hotels are good and will serve you all the meals including a three or four meal course at the end of every day of riding. There is free internet
access and most of the hotels offer a smoke free environment. The bicycle will  be locked space at the end of every day. The rooms have very comfortable beds, a shower and/or a bath, a TV, a safe and a phone.

The price for this amazing 10 day bicycle tour is 3175 US dollar

With you on the road……Dirk Smeets.

More then 20 years ago Dirk started working-part time in a friend’s bicycle shop. It was there were he learned the basics of bicycle maintenance.

In 1993, Dirk began working in a small company as a frame builder in the Netherlands, which was also well known for their bicycle fitting systems.  It give him the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the computerized bicycle fitting service of the company. It was this aspect of the business that was the most fascinating to him. The contact with people and sharing the passion for cycling led him to become a specialist in bicycle fittings. To make his work easier and more interesting he even started to design and make his own measuring instruments.

In 1996 Dirk became a sales rep for the company’s bicycle fitting system. The fitting system is now sold all over the world and was also introduced in the professional cycling world and at that time working closely with top pro cyclists and mechanics, Dirk got the latest knowledge and details about the cycling industry, especially about road cycling and time trial.
Additionally, since 1983 Dirk has been a devoted athlete himself. After reading an article about triathlon he got infected with the “virus”.  He did hundreds triathlon races of all distances including  22 Ironman distance races and an equal number of cycling races all over Europe and the United States. After all these years of working in the cycling business it developed not too just job. It became a passion.
